# Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

// service / geo

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is how you get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews when buyers ask questions in your category. We build the chunked content, schema, and entity graph that AI engines actually quote.

## The search landscape is splintering.

ChatGPT crossed 200 million weekly active users and keeps growing. By mid 2025 it overtook Bing for daily web traffic. Google AI mode adoption is growing about 4% per day. One in five internet users worldwide uses ChatGPT monthly.

The data on Google itself is also moving. AI Overviews now appear on a growing share of queries. The click economy behind them is measurably different from the pre-AI Overview baseline.

**State of search (sourced):**

- **13%** of Google search queries triggered an AI Overview as of March 2025 (Ahrefs)
- **88.1%** of AI Overview queries are informational (Ahrefs)
- **34.5%** drop in position-1 CTR when AI Overviews are present (Ahrefs)
- **43%** zero-click rate on AI Overview queries vs 34% without (SemRush)
- **33%** overlap between ChatGPT and Google results (Profound)
- **66%** of Americans used social search in the last month
- **40%** of Americans have used TikTok as a search engine (64% of Gen Z)

> Organic traffic isn't dying. It's evolving. Showing up is now as important as getting the click. Google rankings are still the backbone of LLM visibility (LLM traffic is mostly additive), but citation-readiness is a separate discipline.

## How we run GEO. 13 pillars in three clusters.

**Technical GEO. Enabling discovery.**

1. Schema evolution for generative search (FAQ, HowTo, Article, Organization, Person, Product).
2. AI bot crawling audits. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot log file analysis.
3. Log file analysis for LLM interactions.
4. Agentic search readiness. MCP endpoints, Markdown-for-bots edge serving.
5. Vector embeddings for semantic search surfaces.

**Content GEO. Being the source AI cites.**

6. Content topic clusters and semantic search optimization.
7. Semantic internal linking optimization.
8. Product and service taxonomies.
9. On-page optimizations (titles, meta descriptions, headers, CLPs, PDPs).
10. Blog creation and content expansion.

**Monitoring and reporting.**

11. Skill-generated tracking prompts at scale (`geo-prompt-research`).
12. Agentic verification across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini.
13. Automated delta reports (`geo-competitor-analysis`).

## The stack we deploy.

Claude · Claude Code · Claude Skills · MCP servers · DataForSEO API · Ahrefs API · Firecrawl · Perplexity API · Custom GEO audit skills

## Who this is for.

B2B and B2C companies in competitive search markets where buyers already ask AI engines for recommendations. Minimum content footprint: roughly 20 indexed pages. You need enough surface area to refactor against.

You also need an editorial operation that can execute the content work, or budget for us to run it. GEO is not a one-time audit you file in a drawer. It is an ongoing discipline.

## LLM tracking packages.

We are partnered with three leading LLM tracking providers to deliver per-engine citation monitoring. Start at **$750/month** for the productized tracking offering. Scope up for deeper analysis and full GEO execution.

- **LLMsRefs.** Best value. Tracks which domains and pages are cited by LLMs. Strong for off-site and citation strategy development. Best for brands focused on being referenced.
- **Profound.** Industry leader. Tracks brand presence, sentiment, and competitors inside AI responses. Best for brands prioritizing reputation and positioning in AI answers.
- **Lightweight tracking.** Simple setup, fast time-to-value. Tracks brand mentions across AI-generated answers for defined prompts. Best for teams new to prompt tracking or running pilots.

LLM tracking is a separate productized offering; it is not bundled into existing SEO or GEO retainers. $750/month as a minimum. Scoped up for brands that want reports, competitor deltas, or full execution.

## Frequently asked questions.

**What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?**
GEO is the practice of structuring your content, schema, and entity graph so AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews cite your brand when users ask questions in your category. It extends classical SEO with chunked architecture, FAQ and HowTo schema, and citation-hook authoring patterns that AI engines prefer.

**How is GEO different from SEO?**
SEO optimizes for ranking links in Google's results. GEO optimizes for being quoted inside generated answers. The overlap is real but partial: GEO weights content chunking, schema coverage, entity clarity, and direct-answer formatting far more heavily. A page can rank in classical Google and still be invisible in ChatGPT. And vice versa. You need both disciplines now.

**How is GEO measured?**
GEO is measured by citation share: how often AI engines quote or reference your brand across a defined prompt set, tracked per engine over time. We generate hundreds of tracking prompts, verify them weekly across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, and report week-over-week deltas against competitors. Classic rankings and traffic still matter as inputs, but the headline metric is whether you are the cited source. See [GEO measurement has to evolve](https://www.winstondigitalmarketing.com/playbooks/geo-measurement-has-to-evolve/).

**How much does GEO cost?**
Our GEO retainers run from $1,000 per month for LLM citation tracking (weekly visibility reports plus a quarterly recommendation deck) to $5,000 per month for a full program (tracking, content production at volume, schema rebuilds, vector embedding work, and log-file analysis of LLM bot interactions). Most clients start at the $3,000 per month tracking-plus-optimization tier. Tracking partners are passed through at cost.

**Which AI engines do you optimize for?**
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and the smaller engines that matter in specific verticals (You.com, Brave Search, Kagi). We monitor citations across all of them and prioritize based on where your buyers actually ask questions.

**How long does it take to see results?**
Early citation signal shows up in 30 to 90 days on well-scoped queries. Compounding visibility, where you are the consistent default citation in your category, takes around six months of disciplined content and schema work. Anyone promising faster is either lying or working in a very thin category.

**Do I need to rebuild my site?**
No. GEO works on your existing CMS. We refactor content into citable chunks, layer on schema, and tune entity signals. All without a replatform. If your site is fundamentally broken we will tell you, but that is rare.

**Do you track our brand across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews?**
Yes. We generate hundreds of tracking prompts per brand with the `geo-prompt-research` Skill, verify them across all major engines on a weekly schedule, and produce delta reports via `geo-competitor-analysis`. Productized as our LLM tracking package starting at $750/month. Scopes up for competitor analysis or full execution.

**What is citation share in AI search?**
Citation share is the percentage of AI answers, for a defined set of prompts, that cite or name your brand as a source. If you track 50 buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, and your domain is cited in 8 of those answers, your citation share is 16 percent. It is the AI-search equivalent of share of voice, and it is the single number we use to measure whether GEO is working, because rankings matter less when the answer is assembled in place.

**How do I show up in AI Overviews?**
Google assembles an AI Overview from pages it can parse, trust, and lift a clean answer from. To earn a spot: answer the exact question in the first 40 to 60 words of a section (the liftable chunk), back it with connected schema so Google can verify the entity, keep the page server-rendered so the answer is visible without JavaScript, and make sure a visible FAQ matches your FAQPage markup. You do not bid for the placement. You make your page the easiest correct source to quote.

**What is the best way to track ChatGPT citations?**
Pick the set of prompts your buyers actually type, then query the engines on a fixed schedule and record whether your domain is cited and which competitors are. The mechanics matter more than the tool: a stable prompt set, weekly cadence, and a delta report so you can see movement. We run this with a tracking pipeline across all major engines and publish our own numbers, but the same method works with any tracker that lets you fix a prompt list and pull source URLs.

**How do I choose a GEO agency?**
Ask three things. First, how do they measure success: a real GEO agency reports citation share against a named prompt set, not vague "AI visibility". Second, do they show their own work: if they cannot get their own site cited by ChatGPT, be skeptical. Third, do they touch the foundation: anyone selling "AI SEO" without mentioning schema, server rendering, and your existing content structure is selling a layer while skipping the base. We publish our full method and our own citation numbers so you can check all three before you talk to us.
